There's — I found this book in the library a few weeks ago. It had symbols on it. No clue what they meant, but this other guy and I, we put our hands on it and a little toy truck appeared out of nowhere. The silliest thing, but there it was. Poof. Just like that. And I felt... the word you used, energy. People can't do stuff like that in my world — I mean, as far as I know, anyway. But I think something about this place makes it possible. I dunno if it's energy or what it is but I felt it, and there's gotta be some way I can do more with it.
You can feel these things in a way I can't — you have experience. So does that... make any sense, what I just said? Do you think I could learn how to do it even though I'm not — even though I don't have...?
[Josh can't put the right words together to explain what he's thinking because he still can't mold his mind to the idea that yes, this is as real as anything else he's ever experienced.]

I'll help if I can. I'm still learning too. There are some exercises, though? In one of the books Michael gave me. Things to help increase your awareness, your ability to sense power. I can copy them down for you. It's at least a place to start.
[Practicality is what he's after. A use for this whatever-it-is. Not for the same reasons as Sarah, though. She wants to be stronger; he just wants to protect his people.
He wants something he can hold, something he can give away, something that says: Here's a part of me, and it will keep you safe.]
[ He's given her something to do, something that matters. She can copy those exercises and then she can look for more. She can help someone, do something that won't remind her in subtle and enervating ways that this is the end, and the end is forever. ]
